Garfield Shadow

Chester's May Festival kicks off on this Wednesday afternoon card with it featuring the Cheshire Oaks, Chester Vase Stakes and plenty more, including Class 3 contests and the 2yo 5f stakes which is a class 2 featuring an intriguing lineup.

But the first race offers quite a bit of value on what should stay good ground this week.

Garfield Shadow is most likely working off a low mark but will have to make all on seasonal debut while contending with a high draw in the stalls.

But it's not enough to rule out the 12/1 shot as an each-way play with a lot of potential going for him over others.

He's unbeaten and won well ahead of Markakol at Newcastle back in October where he shaped as though 6f would suit well.

Arabian Cobra & Lady Lightning

This meeting has thrown out some great results over the years with many who win or do well here going on for greater things.

Last year, Balon D'Or came third in the Lily Agnes, this year trainer Hugo Palmer has Arabian Cobra, an unraced grey colt by Dark Angel.

He's a full brother to a French listed winner and makes appeal on debut on pedigree.

Night In Paris was only just beaten on debut by a colt from Karle Burke's yard, Assertively, with the pair finishing well ahead of the rest of the field on soft ground, and she makes appeal on good.

However, 5f sprints at Chester really do favour the low draws and that's gifted to Lady Lightning who has already won, on debut for Ed Dunlop last month at Wolverhampton.

She's been backed in as early as the day before to be around the favourite at 6/1 and 9/2 in some places from 7/1.

And she's already shown she can win well at a left handed course. Which was a dominant display at 12/1 with plenty in hand with this time being ridden by Hollie Doyle.

Due For Luck

8/1 seems a good price for this three-year-old who was only denied here by a head to Bazball in a Class 3 back in September.

Didn't go as well on next two appearances but has proven course form which goes a long way here.

He's going off the same mark but needs to be considered back on good ground and on a course he's done well at already, with form panning out well from his first two runs and wins.

Forest Fairy

The Cheshire Oaks were won last year by Savethelastdance who ended up trouncing the field by 22 lengths.

She didn't quite make all on her next appearance as the favourite in the Oaks at Epsom, but did win by half a length in the Group 1 Irish Oaks.

The Aidan O'Brien team have a couple of entries this time around with Port Fairy ridden by Ryan Moore and Rubies are Red ridden by William Buick.

They don't often go head to head up on horse from the same yard, so it's interesting to see Buick on board the Galileo filly.

But there's a big price gap from the front three horses to the rest of the field.

Galileo Dame beat Rubies Are Red quite comfortably at Leopardstown on their last starts, the same race that Savethelastdance won.

It puts the Joseph Patrick O'Brien horse clear of a few on that run but that was on heavy ground and clearly suited coming from off the pace to chase down the tired leader.

Forest Fairy was an impressive winner at Wolverhampton back in February, cruising clear by six lengths and a further eight to third place.

The second placed horse, Los Toldos has since won on reappearance to a fair rated horse. While Torrent in third, has gone on to not fare well on his following three runs.

Her form lines from Los Toldos works very well and she was so far clear that day she must have a lot going for her on second outing nearly three months later.

Add to that the fact she's a proven stayer, she could be much better coming into this off what could be a great price too.

Grosvenor Square

The Vase Stakes was won by Arrest last year who dominated the field justifying odds-on favouritism.

This year however, it's the Aidan O'Brien-trained Grosvenor Square who leads the betting.

The colt looks very well suited to stepping up in trip, making all last time at Leopardstown to beat Cambridge by over four lengths.

Prior to that he placed in a Group 2 at the Curragh behind Deepone and Chief Little Rock, and clearly has potential going forward this year for the powerhouse stable.

Coastguard Station

Coastguard Station has been nicely consistent for trainer Henry Oliver.

With decent efforts in defeat behind some top horses over fences on his last few starts.

He won when tipped by me all the way back in November 2022 on his chase debut and still looks to be well-weighted here after winning for just the second time over fences last month.

His effort in second behind Martator has worked out well with that horse going on to win well while his last run, when winning at Fakenham was impressive when carrying over a stone more than the second placed Aviles.

All Too Well

John & Thady Gosden-trained filly by Ulysses who has clearly got potential with a run second favourite to a well experience horse in Scenic.

The filly is given plenty of weight on her debut and will be a popular punt at 11/4 and may well come in on name alone.

You may remember it All Too Well when she makes a taking debut under Rab Havlin, who boasts a 22% strike-rate over the last two weeks.

This 1m4f trip won't be a ten minute version thankfully, and the trainer and jockey pair often do well at this course.

Get Jiggy With It

Charlie Hills is usually in great form and can get a deserved winner under Saffie Osborne here with Get Jiggy With It.

The jockey loves winning at Kempton recently too and has a great way of guiding the horse at the right time, on a track that sometimes needs a little patience.

The three-year-old filly has placed second on three occasions including in some tough Class 2 races, and she's right down in grade here trying to get that elusive first win.
