Cambridge United boss Garry Monk — Cambridge boss Garry Monk will be looking to push them up the table in the 2024-25 season

Cambridge secured their League One safety with a goalless draw at relegated Port Vale on the final day of the regular season.

Garry Monk's side went into the game at Vale Park knowing a point would be enough to ensure they avoided the dreaded drop and started brightly when Gassan Ahadme fired wide early on.

Alex Iacovitti missed a chance for Vale as he headed over from Ethan Chislett's free-kick before goalkeeper Connor Ripley produced a good save to keep out Ryan Bennett's header for Cambridge after he was found by Jubril Okedina at the back post.

Uche Ikpeazu squandered a glorious chance as he missed the target from close range after the break.

At the other end, Scottish defender Iacovitti could only curl his strike straight at Will Mannion.

Ripley produced another good low save to deny Danny Andrew's effort from across the box.

Both sides huffed and puffed as they settled for a point which protected Cambridge's spot in the third tier, having only stayed up last season by winning their final game.

"There's a mix of joy and relief," said Monk. "I think you could see from the game there was a team playing with pressure and a team playing without.

"We did what we needed to do. The aim was to get the point and finish it on our own terms regardless of what anyone else did.

"I'm delighted for everyone at the club. We were tentative and I think that's quite normal given the situation."

Vale boss Darren Moore said there would now be a rebuild to prepare the team for League Two.

"We need to chat with the players individually and collectively....those chats have to take place and then we will go from there," he added.

"The work is already ongoing for the summer. We'll all on the same page in wanting Port Vale to move forward."

Kind of summed up United’s season really. Got the result we needed to ensure League One survival for another year but we did it with the absolute bare minimum of quality and entertainment. Pleased that we survived obviously but it’s hard to take much satisfaction from what has been a very difficult season and it’s hard to see what’s going to be any different next year either.

On reflection my view is that Vale and Cambridge are like many teams in the EFL in that they have owners who love their teams and want them to do really well …….but don’t have the financial clout to make it happen …… and there is not a queue of people with sufficient funds to help them out. Have a good and prosperous summer and see you all in August.

Nothing wrong with that if you accept that to be largely true. If all teams had a load of money to spend there would still be 4 teams who get relegated from this league, and even more supporters who think their club is underperforming.
As long as there is entertainment, (sadly missing on Saturday) and some highs as well as the lows, that is a success.

Well done United, let’s get some of last year’s youth team in the first team squad playing regularly before they get snapped up. Hard and possibly easy decisions (in some cases) in the summer for the management and it ought to start off the field. Good luck Vale, you have a good manager in Darren Moore, hope to see you in League 1 next season.

The clash of the ex Sheffield Wednesday manager's ends in stalemate. MOORE is TACTICALLY INEPT.
MONK I personally think leaving alot to be desired.
I've been watching Cambridge United for 20 year's since meeting my wife and moving south, originally from Sheffield, and to boot a Wednesdayite, I've seen conference football, and been to Old Trafford watching the U's. Time to spend a few quid. CUFC

That game summed up the season and that probably goes for both clubs. Just a very low quality match between two toothless sides. We even had a comedy miss from Uche to highlight the core problem.
Significant rebuild required in the summer but finances will dictate how much can be done.
With no money to strengthen I think Cambridge, Shrewsbury & Burton are pencilled in for L1 relegation already.

It’s brilliant that the largest club in the world (or so they think) like Joke _hity are so obsessed with little Port Vale. Cambridge need to have a good think in the close season and make some astute decisions. Another season like the last two you won't be so lucky.you need a good benefactor, Does Mr Ryan Reynolds know of any, we did warm up Mullins for you.

Mullins would at a minimum be playing championship football with a big club had hadshowcased his talents in League 1 for the last 3 years... alas he is now back where he started 3 years ago. People should realise every mistake Carol makes every sacking or redundancy payments she has to pay is not coming out of Carols pocket it’s just been added to Port Vale’s debt to the Shanahans . Add up 3 managers , dozens of coaches. Flitcroft, Garlick plus Speedy to name just a few . There’s a couple of millions pounds there, could this possibly be why the playing squad is so poor and no loos
