Derby moved to the brink of promotion to the Championship after a 1-0 win at Cambridge.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's goal shortly before half-time leaves Paul Warne's side needing one point at home to bottom club Carlisle next weekend to go up.

Cambridge will be safe if they win either of their two remaining games, or if Cheltenham fail to win both of theirs.

U's keeper Will Mannion tipped Louie Sibley's corner onto the bar early on, while at the other end Joe Wildsmith saved well from Macauley Bonne in the 15th minute.

Mendez-Laing nearly scored in spectacular style after 38 minutes, seeing his superb curler from nearly 30 yards come back off the bar, but he only had to wait a few seconds before putting the Rams ahead.

Sibley played Mendez-Laing in behind the defence, and he rounded keeper Mannion outside the box before firing into an empty net.

Cambridge came on strong after the break, with Jordan Cousins firing just wide from distance and Ryan Bennett seeing a shot blocked.

History repeats itself. Last game of 1975: Derby-Carlisle. Derby were already league champions, and Carlisle had been relegated. Awful 0-0 draw. All Derby players, including the great Franny Lee had hangovers. I was there at the legendary Baseball Ground!

Dangerous play by Taylor, kicks Derby's Adams in the head hard. It's a Red Card offence, so what does the ref do? Absolutely Nothing. Disgraceful officiating.

Good close game; could really have been a win for either side. The only discernible difference between the two sides was Mendez-Laing. Well done Derby from a Cambridge fan.

My grandad remembered watching Steve Bloomer play, my dad remembered the FA Cup win in 1946, and here I am, an old man getting excited about the possibility of promotion from the third tier! It's nice to have a bit of jeopardy going into the last game of the season though.

I've a bit of Baseball Ground in the garage. Might bring it in and put it on the mantlepiece if we get over the line.

Yes my dad was at the cup final in 1946 watching the ball burst ! He gave me his rossette . I went with him to Wembley in 1975 to watch us beat West Ham 2-0 in the charity shield. If he was alive today we would both be anticipating a jolly good smile next weekend. Fingers crossed !! it gets to you this life long attachment thing I could never shake it off. Bless the Rams !

They seem to go to pots on lower teams and do well against better. Last 2 games we need 4 points to be sure unless results go our way. Probably scrappy games but hope derby make it. Hopefully looking like Derby-Forest again next season
