Cambridge earned a gutsy 1-1 draw with Charlton to move a further point clear of the bottom four.

The away side scored first after 23 minutes when George Dobson's pass was taken down on the edge of the box by Connor Wickham, who then fired low beyond Will Mannion to mark his full debut with a goal.

In added time Mannion made an excellent save to deny Tyreece Campbell, and soon after the break he also pushed Tyreeq Bakinson's shot wide.

Instead Cambridge hit back after 50 minutes through Macauley Bonne, who struck a powerful shot on the turn from the edge of the box and celebrated his first U's goal against one of his former clubs.

Charlton missed a huge chance to go back ahead 13 minutes from the end when Dobson played sub Alfie May through on goal, but the division's top scorer saw his shot come back off the far post.

In the final seconds of the game Mannion again came out on top, denying May at his near post.

    21 shots on goal, 5 on target. Charlton need to be more clinical if they're gonna turn these draws into wins. They're clearly creating chances, they just need to put them away.

    MacCauley Bonne comes back to haunt us again. Couldn't hit a barn door when he was at Charlton.

    Probably the right result. Charlton clearly better in the first half and United just about shading the second. Charlton will probably be the more disappointed as they had more than enough chances to have won. As for United hopefully another point nearer to safety. Man of the match unquestionably Will Mannion for me.

    Mission accomplished. Statistics can be misleading but they do tell a story and the Addicks were far better and could easily have come away with a win. Having followed them for the last 3 months I have never seen them lose a game after having troubles early this year. I enjoyed my short term visit and wish you well next season. Go Addicks.

    We’ll know by 9:45pm on Tuesday! Avoid defeat at Bristol Rovers and that could do it. Match stats don’t lie, Charlton had best of the game but for United, it’s all about survival. Next season, if United stay in League Two, will be so difficult compared to this season so recruiting players in the summer is paramount and youth needs to be given a chance.

      Yet another draw BM. But that was all they needed to be assured of their status next season and they did it not depending on misfortunes of other teams. It bodes well for next season. Convert half of those draws into wins, not unreasonable, would make them a serious conder next season. Good luck.

    Just watching the highlights on YouTube I thought they were playing quite well. Wickham's goal was excellent and him and May might give the team a big boost next season. I hope!

    I was at Bishops Stortford services where I stopped on the way back from Cambridge yesterday evening and by chance, the Charlton players stopped there as well. Speaking with a couple of them, they did say that the pitch was terrible.

    Every game Charlton hit the post or crossbar , the ball never seemed to go in off ! I’d love to see the stats for each club! Along with the most draws we must be up there regarding hitting the woodwork!!

    Fair result given Charlton hit the post although shame Cambridge couldn't quite finish it in the second half with wind in their backs. Not the football-playing Charlton of years gone by: lots of long ball/route 1 stuff.

    Yeah well ourn ad loss of chances. I don't know why Kanu n May wasnt both startin meself but Wickham played well in scorin our first. Still we've only lost one game under Nate, 13 games unbeaten on ere but this was one ourn should've won wot with all them chances. Iss appened so often this season ex addicks players score against ourn n thass wot appened today.
